If you love art and are looking to combine your passion with a holiday in the sun, then Art In The Algarve is a perfect choice.

Art in the Algarve is a specialist art holiday provider set up in 2008 by a father and daughter. Having moved to Portugal in 2004 David fell in love with the quaint and charming town of Olhao. An artist's paradise with historical buildings dating back to 1800 this beautiful little town is one of the Algarve's last remaining working towns.

The history of Olhao is connected to the local fishing industry dating back to the 17th century when the town grew into existence, and to this day you will see fishermen delivering fresh fish on a daily basis to the famous market.

Art In The Algarve believes in offering artists a chance to sample a true look into the Portuguese way of life whilst combining their love of painting in this beautiful, enchanting, historic town.

What will happen on the course?
Here’s a sample of what you can expect.
DAY 1
Guests arrive on Saturday - as there are several flights a day to Faro people will be arriving at separate times. We can arrange your transport from the airport to Olhao at an additional cost, however taxi's are fairly reasonable and you should expect to pay around €20. The majority of guests will be in Olhao for dinner - you will be greeted and checked in and then taken to one of the local restaurants.

DAY 2 - 7
Your course begins on Sunday. Each day a continental breakfast will be served in The Pool House or The Art School at around 9:00.
You will then meet your tutor at around 10:00 each day to start the morning lesson. Each day the tutor will brief you on what subjects you will be covering, what styles you will be painting in, and where you will be drawing your inspiration from. This might be a trip around Olhao's fish market, or it could be using some of the props that the Art School provide.
Lunch is served in The Art Bar on a daily basis - food ranges from tapas, salads, and cold meats, all sourced from the local markets.
The afternoon classes start at around 3:00 each day so there is time around lunch to relax, sunbathe, swim, shop etc. At the end of each day the teacher will summarise with a talk and discuss what you will be doing for the following day.
Dinner will be between 8:00 - 9:00 each evening in the local restaurants, however you will obviously take the lead on what time you would like to eat!

Throughout the week there will be field excursions in and around Olhao, a trip (weather permitting) to the neighbouring islands Armona, Farol and Culatra. These islands are the flat dunes of the Ria Formosa and have excellent beaches. There are a few fishermen’s houses, simple restaurants and cafes on these islands. The ferry from Olhao runs during the day and there are water taxis should you miss the ferry. You may also take a trip to another area of Portugal. This will either be within the Algarve or perhaps up to the Alentejo.

DAY 8
As the course runs for 6 days, guests have to check out of their rooms by 10.00am on the Saturday, however it will be possible to carry on using the School .

Accomodation
The status of the town was granted to Olhao in 1808 when 17 fishermen crossed the Atlantic with no papers to announce that the French invading armies had been defeated. The buildings in Olhao show a Moorish flavour. There are many crumbling, empty houses in Olhao which have stood empty for several years. On seeing these beautiful buildings Art in The Algarve set out to restore and preserve some of them.

The Pool House
Rumoured to have been owned by the owner of Olhao's first bank some 150 years ago. Beautifully restored "the pool house" is a typical example of Portuguese architecture. Each bedroom offers spacious dwellings and en suite facilities. Every room has been decorated with antique furniture which adds to the charm of the house.

There are 2 double bedrooms, a further double with an additional single bed, and an attic room which sleeps 3. A spacious sitting room, dining room, kitchen and garden offer guests a very homely, comfortable environment. Hairdryers are provided in each bathroom. The Garden is split over 3 levels with a swimming pool on the ground floor and then two further sunbathing terraces.

The Annex

Situated behind The Art Bar which is on the main street across from the large famous fish and meat markets. The Annex was restored last year and is a smaller flat for people to stay in.

Like all of Art In The Algarve’s properties it has a sense of history with antique furnishings and much of the original detail being retained in the building. On the ground floor there is a large open plan kitchen and living area, then upstairs there are two double bedrooms each with large en-suite bathrooms.

The Artist's House
The artist's house is a charming three storey house with lots of character in the old part Olhao. Although in town the house has lots of outdoor space giving a sense of living both inside and outside. The artist's house also offers up spectacular views of Olhao where you can catch a stunning sun set or for those early birds a glorious sunrise.

The house has one double bedroom with en-suite bathroom, with a further two double bedrooms with a shared bathroom. A large sitting room with Tv and DVD machine, a dining room, kitchen and utility room and a further studio with a single bed. Outside there are four terraces, a wonderful courtyard eating area and a small dipping pool.
