Competition for November 2009: Boats

Nov runner up 3

Boats are often tricky to draw and paint, so this competition was quite a difficult one. I eventually chose this painting (left) by Janice Gardner as the winner. It’s very well drawn, composed and balanced, and there’s an unusual but effective use of muted colours. There’s al;so such a great sense of mood - you could almost be there..

Nov runner up 1

This pencil drawing by Susan Massey (above) is a well deserved runner up as she’s managed to get the shape of the boat perfectly.

This boat by John Kendall also caught my eye. as I liked the clean washes and the sense of light in the painting. The composition is also quite striking and the boat looks solid and well drawn.

Nov 2009 winner

Competition for September 2009: Paint a Portrait

Tony

Portrait painting and drawing is one of the hardest disciplines, so congratulations to everyone who gathered up the courage and took part in this challenge. I think you all did brilliantly, but eventually I had to choose a winner, and for sheer watercolour painting ability and such clever use of colour and tone, I was pleased to choose the painting on the left ‘Kiki and R’ by Tony Macelli.

Below are some of the other outstanding entries that caught my eye. (from left to right by Vivienne Adams, Rosie Phillips, and Ramnath Benegal).
