oil painting course

How does it work

When you sign up for this online oil painting course you will begin to receive emails on a regular basis, a bit like getting a magazine.
Each email links to a lesson, where you will find

an audio introduction to the lesson audio introduction to each lesson

pages of instructionspages of clear instructions to print off and keep

video clips to show you exactly how it’s donevideo clips

Just listen to the audio, print off the pages, watch the video and follow along. Each oil painting lesson builds on the one before, so you grow in confidence as you go along, and you will soon be amazed at how fast you are learning.
The important thing is to actually do the projects. The course is very practical and you will learn by doing. The course works by taking you through a series of carefully graded exercises that build on each other. These cover all the basics of drawing and are designed to give you all the skills you need to develop your drawing.

Keeping Motivated
Because the course comes to you in regular weekly instalments, you will find yourself wanting to paint along with each lesson and the excitement of learning will be kept up. I can guarantee you will learn to paint with these regular lessons! And if you get stuck, you can even email me at any time with problems or questions.

Take your Time
Finally, you can take the courses at your own pace. You don’t have to keep up, or you can choose to go faster! To take the course at a slower pace just save the links and download the lessons whenever you like, or if you want to go quicker, then email me and I’ll send you the complete list of links so you can access the course at your own speed. Each weekly lesson takes about 2 hours to complete.

Whether you are a complete beginner, or are wanting to develop your skills, if you are drawing for work, or as a basis for your paintings, or simply just for the fun of it, then this course is for you!

I'd like to say I think that you have created a great learning tool here, it really helps to see the video, ( you make it look so easy - it was interesting to find how much more practice I will need to handle the paint and get near to your level of fluency with the brush) also its nice to have a voice to listen to, I really appreciate that. Best regards, Christine Mealor

Thanks a million, I love your teaching style, I want you to know you just can't go down the street and find this stuff out! Christine Bellestri

What is covered in the Oil Painting Course?
Here’s a short introduction to the topics covered in this oil painting course. In these seven lessons I will teach you all you need to know about using water-based oil paint (or you can use traditional oil paints) in a fresh and exciting way. The course is carefully written to take you through a structured learning process, showing you in easy steps how to paint in oils.

Here’s what is in each of the 7 weekly parts of this course.

Part 1 Start at the very Beginning      Find out what materials and equipment you will need and how to set up and clean up,  Then try out some exercises in using the paint and a project using three different types of edges

Part 2 Leaving lines  Paint a still life in the style of the great impressionist painter, Paul Cezanne, using his method of drawing lines and then painting within and over them.

Part 3 Painting over under-painting Find out how an underpainting can help with colour mixing and how to leave patches showing through to harmonise your painting. Paint an interior scene in the style of Vincent van Gogh who sometimes used this method.

Part 4 Palette knife impasto   Create thick 3-dimensional paintings with a palette knife.

Part 5 Scumbling and scratching    Learn to mix neutralised colours and put them to good effect in a seascape inspired by Turner. Use scumbling and scratching to create atmosphere, drama and texture.

Part 6 Glazing over   Learn how to use glazes to harmonise a painting and to change the atmosphere. Use glazes to paint a stunningly lit sunset.

Part 7 Alla prima en plein air Learn how to paint a complete picture outdoors and in one go

along the way you will learn:

  • how to paint without drawing
  • How to use just a few colours for amazing results!
how to paint in an impressionistic and in a realistic style
  • how to paint landscapes and still life.
  • How to use a pochade box
  • How to paint en plein air and from photographs
  • Learn from past masters of oil painting, Turner, van Gogh, and Cezanne
